I wanted to create a piece which showed how fossils are often found, still embedded in the rocky material which they've been surrounded in for millennia. After a lot of searching, I finally found the perfect trilobite - a complete specimen still in it's matrix that was small enough that I could make a mold of it! The entire chunk of rock and fossils was duplicated in wax, then I carved away everything but just the trilobite and a neat circle of the surrounding shale, giving it a nice smooth back and edge while preserving some of the great texture of the rock.
